MS Word 97 and PWP @att.net

This page gives basic instructions on using MS Word 97 to make your Web page(s). This page is meant to be simple, for use by first-timers who just want to get their stuff on the Web. It does not go into using secondary FTP programs, inserting counters, etc. There is plenty of help available when you are ready to progress. This page does assume you have a working knowledge of Word 97 and have registered for a PWP site.

Note: You will need to find your AT&T Worldnet Service account information.

Creating Your First Page

  1. Before creating your Web page, create a new (empty) directory on your hard drive. Give it a name like HomePage, for example.
  2. Launch Word97.
  3. From the File, and choose New.
  4. Select the Web Pages tab and choose a style or a blank page. Click the OK button.
    web pages tab
  5. From the Format menu, select Background, and choose Fill Effects.
    Select Background
  6. Choose a background or select the Other Texture button and select the background image of your choice.
Note: Web page images must be .gif or .jpg format.
    Select Texture
    Select Texture 2
  7. Now to save your page:
    1. From the File menu, choose SaveAs.
    2. Change Save In to the empty directory you created in step 1.
    3. Change the Save As Type to HTML Document.
    4. Give your first page the name of index.htm or home.htm. It is best to use lower case. This is important if you want visitors to your site to have immediate access to your Web page! If you DON'T want this degree of public access, do not have an index.htm or home.htm page in your Web site parent directory.
    Save As
  8. Enter and format text in your page. Save your work frequently.
  9. Add pictures (or animated gifs) by clicking at the location on your page where the image is to be placed. Then, from the Insert menu, select Picture, and choose From File. Select the gif or jpg picture you want to insert.
Important Note: On the right side of the dialog box deselect the check box labeled Link To File! Do NOT link to file! Also, deselect the check box labeled Float Over Text.
    Insert Picture
  10. To format the picture, from the Format menu, choose Picture.

Creating Additional Pages and Links

Now we are going to create a second page and add a link leading from your first page to the second page.

  1. Create a new page just as we dis in steps 3 and 4 above.
  2. Save the new page as we did in step 7 above. However, give the file a new and different name that is lower case, no more than eight letters, and contains no spaces or non-alphanumeric characters. Be sure to save as HTML Document in your home page directory.
  3. From the Window menu, choose your first page (index.html or home.html).
  4. Insert some text describing the second page (like Photos of our Hedgehog) text. You can also insert an small image to use as a button, or use both to link to the next page.
  5. Select the text, image, or image and text which links to the second page.
  6. From the Insert menu, choose Hyperlink.
  7. Click the Browse button for Link To File Or URL.
    Insert Hyperlink
  8. Go to the directory where you saved your pages
  9. From the Files Of Type drop-down menu, choose Internet Files, then select the page to link to and click the OK button.
  10. Return to the new page and add text, images, etc. Save your work. Link to File
  11. Repeat this section for each new page.

If you followed the directions, all of your pages, images, sound files, etc. should be located in one place, the directory you first created!
