Streaming Audio and Video

Real Audio and Real Media streaming files may be added to your pages by methods known as linking and embedding. Users have told us that embedding only works for sound files, and that linking should be used for video clips. An embedded file places or embeds a Player on your PWP that a visitor uses to hear your file by pressing buttons or controls on that player. Linking allows a lPlayer to be launched when a visitor clicks on text on your PWP that is linked or associated with the Audio or Media file you uploaded to your online directory. Example: "Listen to my Audio File" or "See to my Video".

The instructions on this page concern Real Audio/Video files, but there's links to information on other file types in the Additional Information section. Please be sure to read the troubleshooting section before publishing your page.

Embedding a RealAudio file

In all examples, substitute your e-mail id for emailid and replace myfile.rm with the name and path to your file. Your e-mail id is the part to the left of the @ in your e-mail address.

  1. Upload the ra file to your online directory.
  2. Place the following code on your page:
    <embed src="http://home.att.net/~emailid/myfile.rm" height=100 width=200 autostart=false>
  3. Upload or publish the html page in question.

This should place a working Real Player console on your page that is the height and width as specified above. The user simply clicks on the triangle to start the file. If you wish it to start automatically make the substitution autostart=true.

Linking To A Real Audio/Real Media File

In all examples, substitute your e-mail id for emailid and replace myfile.rm with the name and path to your file. Your e-mail id is the part to the left of the @ in your e-mail address.

  1. Upload the ra or rm file to your online directory
  2. Open notepad or any text editor. Type in:
    http://home.att.net/~emailid/myfile.rm
    and save it as myfile.ram.
  3. Upload the myfile.ram file to your online directory.
  4. Place the following html code on your page. Make sure that you substitute the correct information for emailid and myfile.ram, and make changes in the text to reflect what you want to be seen on the page.
    <a href="http://home.att.net/~emailid/myfile.ram">Hear my Whatever sound clip</a>
  5. Upload or publish the html page in question.

Now when someone clicks on your text, it will point to this file. This will launch the RealPlayer, and will play the myfile.rm file.

In order to stream Real Media via Http from the AT&T Worldnet Web servers, it must be encoded as normal Realmedia format, with a chosen modem speed. You cannot use Smart Stream as this requires a specialized streaming media server. Be aware also that the newer G2 encoder can encode to either G2 or Real Player 5 standards. Users with G2 can view either format but Real Player 5 users cannot view G2 content.
