FrontPage 2000

This page was designed for AT&T Worldnet personal Web page members who are trying to use FrontPage 2000 to create, edit and/or publish their Web pages to their PWP @att.net Web site.

Note: You will need to find your AT&T Worldnet Service account information.

We've included the following sections:

Publishing Your Pages

  1. When your Web site is ready to publish, from File on the menu, choose Publish Web.
    file menu
  2. You will see the Publish Web dialog box as shown in the graphic below.
    publish web dialog
  3. Type the following into the location box:
    ftp://upload.att.net or ftp://upload.worldnet.att.net
  4. If the box isn't expanded like the graphic below, Click the Options button to reveal all of the options. You'll have a choice to publish every page, or just the ones that have changed. The first time that you publish, every file will be uploaded, no matter which option that you select. Click the Publish button to publish your pages.
    publish web dialog: options
  5. At this point, you should get asked for your Name and Password. Complete the boxes as shown below (with your information) and Click the OK button.
    • Name: Your e-mail ID (the part to the left of the @ sign)
    • Password: Your e-mail password
    name and password dialog
Note: If you have more than one Web site, you must use the e-mail ID and password for the one you're trying to upload. You must also close FrontPage between publishing to different e-mail IDs. For additional help with managing your personal Web space with different IDs, visit the WURD on Managing Web sites.
  6. You should see the dialog box shown below as it is trying to connect to the server.
    connecting window
  7. After the connection is made, you will see this box while FrontPage is cataloging the files on the upload.att.net server.
    listing pages window
  8. You will see the following dialog box for all files that FrontPage found were already on the server. Click the Yes button if you wish to replace the old file with the new one. If you know that you want all of the files to be replaced, Click the Yes to All button. If you don't want a file to be replaced, Click the No button. Click the Cancel button to stop the upload.
    over write dialog
  9. If there are files on the upload.att.net server that aren't in the Web on your hard drive, FrontPage will ask if you want them removed. If you want the files on your Web server to be synchronized with the files on your hard drive, you should answer Yes to this question.
By removing it, you are in effect deleting the images and files from the server that no longer exist in your current Web on your hard drive. If you don't want the files to be deleted, choose No.
    remove file dialog
  10. After all of the files are uploaded and the synchronization is complete, you will see the following box. Because the files are uploaded to an FTP server and then automatically moved to the WWW server, the Click here to view your published Web site link will not work properly. Click the Done button, open your browser, type your url in the address box and view your newly uploaded pages.

Can't Publish?

We've seen a couple of types of problems you can have while trying to publish to the PWP @att.net servers, and have some solutions.

  1. Make sure that you are connected to AT&T Worldnet Service before publishing your Web pages.
  2. If you have the FrontPage 98 personal Web server installed, either uninstall it or upgrade to the latest Microsoft personal Web server. See our FrontPage 2000 Tips section for details. Some users have had success with this.
  3. If you know that you've typed in the correct e-mail ID and password, but keep getting asked for them repeatedly, try the following:
    1. Open the My Computer icon and then the Dial Up Networking folder.
    2. Right-click on your AT&T Worldnet connection icon and choose Properties.
    3. Select the Server Types tab.
    4. Place a check mark in the Log on to network box.
    5. Click the OK button.
    6. Reconnect and try again.

If you've followed the instructions exactly and are having problems uploading, try the troubleshooting steps in our PWP FAQ.

FrontPage 2000 Tips

Compatibility

If you want your Web page to be seen correctly by the largest number of browsers, you should be sure that your FrontPage options are set accordingly.

  1. From the Tools menu, choose Page Options.
    tools menu
  2. Click the Compatibility tab and change the settings as follows:

    • Browsers: Both Internet Explorer and Navigator
    • Browser versions: 4.0 browsers and later
    • Servers: custom
    • Remove the check mark from Enabled with Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions since they are not supported by the AT&T Worldnet PWP servers.
  3. The technologies available to you with those settings will be checked under Available Technologies. FrontPage won't let you use anything that isn't supported by all browsers, 4.0 or later.
Note: If you wish to support 3.0 browsers too, chose 3.0 browsers and later. Additional technologies will not be available for your use.

FrontPage Extensions

You can use FrontPage to create your Web pages on your PC and then upload them, but you will not be able to utilize FrontPage extensions like bots and such. PWP Web server does not currently support proprietary server extensions like FrontPage Extensions, but does offer some features that you can use. You'll find a description of these features at:http://home.att.net/announce/index.html

If you create pages that require the following FrontPage server extensions, they will not work with AT&T Worldnet personal Web pages:

The following FrontPage features will work with AT&T Worldnet personal Web pages:

In the same vein, active server pages (.asp) will not work on PWP, either.

For additional information on using FrontPage without the server extensions, see the following page:
How to Use FrontPage 2000 Without FrontPage Extensions

If you need FrontPage extensions, and would like to have your page hosted on AT&T servers, you can sign up with AT&T Web Site Services at the following URL:

Personal Web Server

Even though a personal Web server isn't necessary when using FrontPage 2000, we recommend using Microsoft's Personal Web Server version 4. If you upgraded from FrontPage 98 and are using the FrontPage 98 personal Web server, we recommend that you upgrade to the newer version. Some people have had problems publishing using the FrontPage 98 Web server with FrontPage 2000. You can find Microsoft's Personal Web Server 4 on the Windows 98 CD, or you can download it from Microsoft. Note: If you use the personal Web server, you will have to be connected to the Internet whenever you work on your pages.

Since a personal Web server opens your computer to outside access, be sure that you install all security updates as they are released.

After publishing your pages, turn off the server and check your uploaded pages. If there are any problems, you can usually spot them right away. Without the Personal Web Server, if the pointers to graphics are pointing to your hard drive, you wouldn't know it because you would still be able to see them even if others couldn't.

Using a personal Web server is also nice if you want to show someone a page or graphic, but don't want to actually publish it. You just send them the ip address of your current session along with the filename, and they can see it on your server. Note: We recommend that you keep your Web server turned off unless you're actually working on your Web pages.

Before you actually publish your pages to the AT&T Worldnet personal Web page servers, you should change the default page on YOUR personal Web server to one of the required default file names as mentioned on the PWP Addresses page. To change the default File Name on Microsoft's Personal Web Server 4, right-click the personal Web server icon in your system tray and select Properties. Select Advanced, and then make sure that the Enable Default Document box is checked and enter the default file name in the Default Document box. Remember, it should be one of the default file names noted on the PWP Addresses page.

Vanity URLs

If you want to use a vanity url and use graphics from the PWP Clip Art Gallery, use a complete url to refer to them. If you don't, those graphics will not show when you're using the vanity url. The PWP instructions say that you must use a BASE REF tag when using a vanity url, but we've found that putting in a BASE REF tag when you're using FrontPage 2000 tends to mess up the links on your pages. For every graphic that you're using from the PWP Clip Art Gallery, put the following in the front of the graphic file name.

http://home.att.net

For example, if your source looks like this:
<a href="/cgi-bin/GBView?owner=emailid">
<img src="/global-images/guestbook/view_gb.jpg" border=0></a>

Change it so it looks like this:
<a href="/cgi-bin/GBView?owner=emailid">
<img src="http://home.att.net/global-images/guestbook/view_gb.jpg" border=0></a>

It isn't necessary to put the full url for all links, just the ones that refer to the PWP Clip Art Gallery graphics.

Adding PWP Features

When adding one of the PWP features to your page when you're using FrontPage 2000 and the copy and paste method, follow the procedure below:

  1. Copy the code of the feature that you want to include on your personal Web page.
  2. On the Normal tab, place your cursor on the page where you want the feature to be located.
  3. From the Edit menu, choose Paste Special.
  4. Choose Treat as HTML.

Adding Sound

You can add sound to your page by inserting a plugin. Just follow the procedure below:

  1. Place your cursor where you want the sound to show. Go to Insert on the menu, and then select Advanced, and then Plug-in.
    insert menu
  2. Browse your Web to find your sound file for the Data Source box. Then, place the following code in the Message for browsers without plug-in support box.
  3. <bgsound src="mymidi.mid" loop="infinite">
  4. Replace mymidi.mid with the name of your sound file.
  5. For information on sizes, etc, see Sound.
    plugin properties
  6. Click the OK button. You'll see the graphic below in the location you selected. Yours might look a little different, depending on the size that you chose.
