CompuServe and AT&T Worldnet Service
AT&T Worldnet Service provides value-added directories and search engines that make it the best way to access the Internet -- including online service providers like CompuServe. Did you know that you can access CompuServe through a regular ISP? Well you can. If you presently have CompuServe's 3.0 or greater client, you can configure it to operate over AT&T Worldnet Service. To do so, follow the steps below.
To configure CompuServe 3.0 - 4.01 for AT&T Worldnet Service:
- Launch your CompuServe client.
- From the Help menu, choose the About CompuServe for Windows option and verify that you have Version 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.0.2 or later.
- From the Access menu, select Preferences.
- Select the Connection tab. Your member information should be here, along with information on how to connect to CompuServe.

- In the box labeled Network, select the drop-down arrow and select CompuServe.
- In the box labeled Winsock, select the drop-down arrow and select Dial-Up Networking.
- In the box labeled Connect Using, select the drop-down arrow and select the connection entry associated with AT&T Worldnet Service. It will typically be labeled AT&T Worldnet or AT&T Worldnet Service. If you have both, select AT&T Worldnet Service.
- Click the OK button.
AT&T Worldnet Service recommends that you use the branded browser that came with your AT&T Worldnet software for accessing the Internet from CompuServe.
To set a different default browser:
- Launch your CompuServe client.
- From the Access menu, select Preferences.
- Select the General tab.
- Make sure the Use external Internet browser box is checked if it isn't already.
- Click on the Select button. This will bring up a browse dialog. Browse to the location of your branded browser. The location may vary, depending on your installation but typically, these are found as:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Internet\Iexplore.exe
or
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe - Netscape Navigator
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Navigator\Program\netscape.exe

- Microsoft Internet Explorer
- After you find the program, click on the Open button.

- Click on the OK button to accept the changes.
You should now be configured to access CompuServe over AT&T Worldnet Service!
To use the CompuServe client, start it as you normal would. When you click on the Connect icon, or access any online content, the AT&T Worldnet Service connection will be dialed, you will connect to CompuServe over AT&T Worldnet Service.
If you already have connection to AT&T Worldnet Service established, the CompuServe client will use this connection to access CompuServe.
When using CompuServe, if you click on the Internet icon, or otherwise access Internet content, control will be passed to the branded browser you configured as the external Internet browser. You can switch back and forth between CompuServe content and Internet content.
Note: AT&T Worldnet Service charges apply to all connect time. CompuServe charges apply to all time while connected to CompuServe. You are still connected to CompuServe until you specifically disconnect.
To configure CompuServe 4.02 for AT&T Worldnet Service:
- Select Preferences from the Access menu and then click on the Connection tab.
Note: If you want to retain your existing dial-up settings as a backup, make these changes shown below in a new Connection Set instead of changing your current connection. Click on the Add button on the Connection tab of the Preferences dialog to do so. Otherwise, make the changes in your current connection. - In the Connection Type area, select the Use ISP/LAN Manual Connection option. You will then see the Configure ISP/LAN settings... button. Click on that button. In the resulting ISP/LAN Settings dialog box, select Default Winsock from the drop-down list in the Winsock field, and then click on the OK button to close the dialog box.
- In the Connection Settings area of the Connection tab, select Internet from the drop-down list in the Network field. Click on the OK button to close the dialog box and save your changes.
Once you have made those changes to your connection preferences, you can connect to CompuServe via your AT&T Worldnet connection.
To connect to CompuServe via your AT&T Worldnet connection:
- Establish the AT&T Worldnet connection.
- Launch your CompuServe software
- Click on the Connect button. This will connect you to CompuServe using your existing AT&T Worldnet connection.
