Help Newsgroup FAQs - PWP
This document contains the AT&T Worldnet Help PWP Newsgroup FAQs posted to the worldnet.help.faqs newsgroups every 30 days.
If you have problems or questions, be sure to check the help file for the application you are using. If your problem is still not resolved or your questions remain unanswered after reading our PWP FAQ and the PWP Newsgroup FAQ, AT&T Worldnet Service has several help newsgroups dedicated to your personal Web pages. Read our PWP Newsgroups Tips page for the types of information that is needed. If you're new to newsgroups, also read our Newsgroups Tutorial for a brief introduction to newsgroups and instructions on how to participate in them. Note: If you're looking for AT&T DSL Service support, see http://dslhelp.att.net
Click the newsgroup name if you're dialed into AT&T Worldnet Service. If you are dialed into AT&T Worldnet Service and would rather use your browser than a newsreader to view these newsgroups, click the webnews link and the newsgroup will open in a new browser window. If you've enabled accessing your account from another ISP, use a newsreader that supports SSL and have configured your newsreader to access the iNetNews servers, click the iNetNews link to the right of the newsgroup name.
If your browser supports it, hover your mouse pointer over the newsgroup name and a brief description of the newsgroup will be displayed.
Note: When you open the software, make sure you expand the plus (+) signs next to the messages listed. By doing this you will be able to view the messages and responses of others as well as see the answer to your particular question.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) allows you to move files back and forth between your local computer and a remote computer somewhere else. In the case of AT&T Worldnet Personal Web Pages, it is the way you get your files from your computer to your PWP directory on the Internet. There are a few different ways to FTP or upload files to your PWP directory.
The simplest way to upload a few files is to log in and use the Upload Tool in the PWP Publishing Resources area.
If you choose to use a program other than the Upload Tool, the basic settings are as follows:
- The name field should be your e-mail ID
- The password field should be your e-mail password
- The server or host address should be: upload.att.net
Many Web publishing and page design programs allow you to upload or publish your files directly to your directory. Information about setting up many programs for use with the Personal Web Publishing FTP servers can be found at Web Editors and Personal Web Pages @att.net.
Although you can use the routines that are built in to many applications to upload your files, it is recommended that you use a FTP program such as WS_FTP or Cute FTP for the PC, and Fetch or Anarchie for the Mac. For tutorials on these and other FTP applications, go to FTP and Personal Web Pages @att.net.
The meaning of a FTP error message can be found at AT&T Worldnet Help Site FTP Error Messages
If you have any questions, feel free to post a question in the worldnet.help.pwp.new-users newsgroup:
Please include a detailed description of the problem you are experiencing, any error messages, and the FTP tool you are using (FTP program, HTML editor, online upload tool, Windows FTP tool in MS-DOS, etc.)
PWP and Images on Your Web Page
You have worked long and hard at creating your Web page. You have made your way through the hoops and hurdles of FTP. Yet even though your Web pages look perfect on your local computer, after you uploaded them to your directory, your images were broken or missing. To resolve this, try these few steps below.
- Did you upload your images to your directory?
If not, do so. Also, if you used an FTP program, be sure that you uploaded the images in binary format or auto/auto-detect format. Files, including images, will not appear in your directory until the FTP connection has been terminated. - Are they in your directory? Go to the PWP Site Management Tools: Disk Usage page and check to see if your files are listed here? If not, upload the files to your directory.
- Are they listed in a subdirectory such as images?
If a file named flower.gif is in a subdirectory named images it would appear in your directory as images/flower.gif. If it is not in a subdirectory, it will appear in your directory as flower.gif.
Make sure the image tag in your HTML file calls on the image in its proper directory. If it is in a subdirectory called "images" your image tag should look something like this:
<img src="images/flower.gif">
If the image is not in a subdirectory your image tag should look something like this:
<img src="flower.gif"> - Check the spelling and case of your file names as they are stored in your directory against the way they are entered in the image tags in your HTML file. The Personal Web Page server is case sensitive, which means that flower.gif is not the same as Flower.gif or FLOWER.GIF.
- Make sure all filenames consist of only letters, numbers, underscores [ _ ], periods, and dashes. In addition, filenames may not start with a period or a dash.
If you are still having problems after you make these checks, feel free to post to the worldnet.help.pwp.new-users newsgroup:
PWP Help
Below are some things you can do to help us assist you.
- ALWAYS post the URL or Web address (e.g., http://home.att.net/~mypage) of the page that you are having problems with.
- Please post your problem to the appropriate group:
- Use the worldnet.help.pwp.new-users newsgroup when you have questions about the overall PWP program such as how to use templates, features of PWP, FTP or adding graphics or sound, etc. to your pages.
- The worldnet.help.pwp.advanced-users newsgroup should be used when you have a question about coding in HTML or with the use of third-party Web authoring tool, such as, FrontPage, PageMill, Homesite, Netscape Composer, etc. or if you are having trouble setting up the AT&T SecureBuy(sm) Service feature.
- Do not e-mail your questions or responses, unless otherwise specified. Instead, please post them to the appropriate group. You are probably not the only person that is having this problem. By asking your question in the group you are helping others.
- If you have a question, don't jump into an established thread. Instead, start a new thread with your question. Interrupting a thread can make getting and giving help harder. If you have started a thread and are getting help, then continue in the same thread. The continuity will make it easier for us to see the history of your problem.
- If all you see are questions in the newsgroup and no answers, you may not have the threads expanded to read the responses. Next to the subject of the question, you will see a little box with a plus sign [+]. Select it and the thread will expand to show the responses.
