Where can I find instructions on configuring my browser?
We have provided configuration information for a large number of software packages. You will find links to the latest versions from there.
How do I make the most of my online time now that there is a time limit?
You'll find that information in Saving Time.
I get an "Unable to initialize network layer. Check winsock for errors" message every time I start Netscape. What do I do now?
This normally means you have multiple winsock.dll or wsock32.dll files. Scan your hard drive for both of these files and see if you have multiples. You should have one of each in your windows directory only.
Also, it is possible that you may have a different vendors wsock32.dll or winsock.dll on your system. This might occur if you have previously used an ISP such as pipeline, which overwrote your windows versions. In that case, you will have to re-install your TCP/IP stuff from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Be sure and remove the old TCP/IP before you re-install.
I get a "Netscape was unable to create a network socket connection" message when I start it. What do I do now?
This may mean you are trying to run a 32bit version of Netscape with a 16bit dialer. Either download a 16bit version or upgrade your dialer to a 32bit version.
I get a "The server does not have a DNS entry" message when I run Netscape. What do I do now?
Netscape has an excellent explanation on this.
I get the error "Unable to launch external viewer! Error Code=16" every time I try to download a file. What do I do now?
At some point in time you chose a file to download and you clicked on configure a viewer instead of to save to disk. Follow these instructions to change Netscape settings back:
- Launch Netscape.
- Then, based on the version of Netscape you are using:
- Netscape 1.2:
- From the Options menu, choose Preferences.
- Select the Helpers Apps tab.
- Netscape 2.x and 3.x:
- From the Options menu, choose General Preferences.
- Select the Helpers tab.
- Netscape 1.2:
- Scroll through the list of helper apps and find the one that has exe,bin in the extensions column.
- Click once on exe,bin to highlight the row
- Click the unknown: prompt user option or the Save to disk option.
- Click OK
- Repeat the above steps for the column with the .zip extension.
The next time you download a file, you will either be prompted for what you want to do with it or it will save it directly to disk, if you chose that option.
How do I configure the 32bit version of Netscape 3 for use with multiple ISPs, mailboxes etc?
An excellent recommendation on this is available in the Unofficial Netscape FAQ
What are cookies, and why do I keep getting them?
You can learn a lot about cookies by visiting the following site:
Does AT&T Worldnet Service provide any software that I can use to protect my children while they are surfing?
Yes, they do. You can read about it on the following page.
What are cache files?
Cache files are copies of the images and Web pages that you have visited that are stored on your computer. They help to speed up the time it takes to load a Web page on your next visit to that site. In Internet Explorer these are called Temporary Internet Files.
Where can I find the latest AT&T Worldnet Co-branded Browsers?
The newest co-branded browsers can be downloaded from the AT&T Worldnet Service Downloads and Upgrades page.
Where can I find plugins for Netscape?
Many plugins can be found at the Netscape Browser Plug-ins page.
How do I backup my bookmarks or favorites?
Netscape's bookmarks are saved in a file named bookmark.htm. Simply copy this file to a floppy disk or another folder on your hard drive.
Internet Explorer Favorites are kept in a folder named Favorites in the Windows folder. Copy the contents of this folder to another drive or to floppy disks. This folder can get quite large, so if you copy it to floppy disk, you may need more than one diskette.
How do I clear the Web sites that I have typed in from the address bar?
You can get step by step instructions for clearing the address bar in Internet Explorer from the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
For Netscape, you can use these handy utilities:
Navigator 3.0x:
Communicator (Win95/98 only):
Communicator 4.06
- Launch Netscape Communicator 4.06
- From the Edit menu, select Category, and choose Preferences.
- Click on Navigator.
- Click on Clear Location Bar.
- Click the OK button.
Can I use use any browser that I wish for surfing the net?
Yes, you can!

I get a message saying that an internal error occurred in windows Internet extensions. What do I do now?

Otherwise:
- From the Start menu, select Settings, and choose Control Panel.
- Double-click the Networks icon.
- Select the TCP/IP tab.
- Click the Remove button, and then the OK button.
- Restart the computer.
- From the Start menu, select Settings, and choose Control Panel.

- Click all the OK buttons to reinstall.
I get an error message when clicking on Help/Product Updates using IE4. How do I fix it?
If you get an error message when clicking on Help/Product Updates in IE4, click on this link for access to that menu item:
I get a "WNET GET USER RETURNED" message? How do I fix it?
- From the Start menu, select Settings, and choose Control Panel.
- Double-click the Networks icon.
- Select the TCP/IP tab.
- Click the Remove button, and then the OKbutton.
- If you don't see Client for Microsoft Networks, add it. You need the Identification Tab that it adds to Network so that you can set your computer name.
- Click the Identification tab.
- Change your computer name to something short and simple; do not use any special characters (like #, *, &).
- On the Network list, remove NetBEUI and IPX/SPX protocols, if they are there. You must keep TCP/IP.
How do I fix this? I installed a later version of communicator over the co-branded version, but the Netscape animated icon still takes me to the AT&T Worldnet Service home page.
Seems like installing over an existing browser fails to overwrite netscape.cfg file. Try to delete (or rename) this file that is located in your communicator\program directory and reinstall the upgrade.
Does AT&T Worldnet Service provide software that I can use to do financial transactions online? My bank tells me that my browser is not compatible.
To do such transactions online, you need to use a browser with US 128 bit strong encryption. Microsoft has a small file that you can download to give you the US 128 bit, while Netscape requires you to download a full version. There is also a small 3rd party application for Netscape, but there is no support for Windows 3.1.

How do I save a Web page to my system?
If you just want to save pages from your Web site, see the instructions in our PWP FAQ. If you want to save a page from another Web site, continue below.
The View Source option found in both Netscape and Internet Explorer (browsers that most of us already have on our computers) might be the only tool you'll need. Depending on your system configuration, it may open the code in an ascii editor. If that happens, you can do an immediate file save; be sure to save the file with either an html or htm extension.
If your browser opens the source in something other than an ascii editor, you can block and copy it into whatever editor you have and then save. If you want to save the images too, right click on each image on the page and save them into the same folder.
If you prefer to use your browser to do the saving, it can be done in several different ways. We've included instructions for Netscape and Internet Explorer below. Whichever method you choose to use, it would be a good idea to set up a directory or folder to store the pages in so that they can be easily retrieved once they've been saved.
Netscape
- Save html code only:
- From the File menu, choose Save As.
- Navigate to the directory or folder that you want to save the file in.
- In the File name box, enter a meaningful name (be careful not to use one that already exists).
- Save html code and the images:
- On the menu bar, choose Edit Page. This will open Composer.
- From the File, choose Save As.
- Navigate to the directory or folder you previously created and enter an appropriate file name.
- All images associated with this page will be stored in this folder or directory.
Internet Explorer 5
- Save html code only:
- From the File menu, choose Save As.
- Navigate to the directory or folder that you want to save the file in.
- In the file name box, enter a meaningful name. In the save as type box, select Web Page, HTML only.
- Save html code and the images:
- From the File menu, choose Save As.
- Navigate to the directory or folder that you want to save the file in.
- In the file name box, enter a meaningful name. In the save as type box, select Web Page, complete. This will save the images in a subfolder of the original folder. This folder will have the same name as the saved html file.
Note: It is not recommended that you use this method for backing up your personal Web pages. Not only will the images be stored in a separate directory or folder, the code generated by this method might contain additional code that was not part of the original page. Use the method described for saving html only and then save each image by right clicking on the image on the Web page and save them into the same folder.
