Windows NT 3.51 RAS and AT&T Worldnet Service
This page provides instructions on how to set up RAS on your NT workstation to connect to the AT&T Worldnet Service. The instructions assume that you have already configured your NT workstation to use RAS.
Note: You will need to find your AT&T Worldnet Service account information.
To configure Windows NT 3.51 RAS:
- Launch RAS by running the rasphone.exe program from the file manager or by clicking on the Remote Access icon in the Remote Access Service program group. A window will be displayed as shown below:
- Click the Add button. In the window that is displayed, add the entries that you prefer. Make sure that you enter the correct phone number and remove the checkmark from the Authenticate using current user name and password check box.
- Click the Modem button to display the window shown below. Select the options as shown below. First try to connect to the AT&T Worldnet Service without modem compression. If you are successful, then you can come back to this window and try later with compression turned on. When you are done click the OK button.
- On the window shown in step 2, click the Network button. The window shown below will be displayed. Select the options shown below.
- Next click the TCP/IP Settings button. Select the options as shown below. Keep in mind that some people seem to have a problem with DNS when specific DNS server IP addresses are not entered below. First try to access the AT&T Worldnet Service with the options shown below. If you are able to connect to the service successfully but are unable to resolve any DNS entries, then you should come back to the window below and enter the following values as your DNS and DNS Backup - 204.127.129.4 and 204.127.160.4 or 204.127.160.3 and 204.127.129.3 respectively. If you are already tired of NT RAS, then enter the above DNS IP addresses after choosing the Use specific name server addresses option. After you are done with the changes on this window, click the OK button.
- You will now be put back in the Network Protocol Settings window (step 4 above). Click on OK button again in this window. You should now see the window in step 2 above.
- Now click the Security button. The window shown below should now be displayed. Select the options shown below. I have not been able to get NT scripting to work with the CHAP authentication that AT&T Worldnet Service uses. After you are done with the changes below, click the OK button.
- You will now be put back in the window shown in step 2 above. You are essentially done with the configuration, so click the OK button. You will now see an entry for the WORLDNET displayed on the Remote Access window (shown in step 1 above).
- Now click the Options menu item and select the options shown below. These setting will enable you to monitor the traffic going over the PPP link you have set up.
- Highlight the WORLDNET entry and click the Dial button. A window as shown below will be displayed.
You will now need to enter your 16 character password that you have for the AT&T Worldnet Service. You probably got this from a customer care representative or when you initially registered using AT&T Worldnet Service software.
Enter that password into the password field above. Do not enter any value in the Domain field. Note: there is no way to store your password in NT. If you do not like to enter the password, then follow this link. Now click the OK button.

- Your RAS client will now dial up to the AT&T Worldnet Service. A window will popup giving you a status of the logon process. You should see a message on this popup indicating verifying user name and password and registering your computer on the network respectively. If you have successfully logged in to the network, at this point this popup will change to an icon at the bottom of your screen and the Remote Access monitor window will show a green color in the right most LED indicating that a carrier signal has been established. Now you are connected to the Internet. If you seem to be unable to resolve DNS entries you may have to go in and enter the AT&T Worldnet Service DNS server IP addresses.
