The AT&T Worldnet Phone book Feature
This document is intended to help users get the most out of the NEW Phone book feature for those using AT&T Worldnet Service with their Windows CE Device. There are several important sections, each of them explained below.
- Introduction to the new Phone book feature
- Power Users approach to getting the most out of the Phone book
- Casual Users approach to using the Phone book
- Updating your Access Numbers
- Dialing Patterns - How to properly set up your Locations
Phone book - Connection and Location options
The new Phone book feature gives you the ability to have multiple Locations (area codes, dialing properties, etc.) as well as multiple Connections, (which in this case means multiple Worldnet Accounts, each with a different name, but having the same User Name and Password) and the option of having them linked to each other.
Power User
If you are a Power Traveler, you may like the total linking ability. The following is a good example:
Let's say your office is located in New Jersey, so you are going to have a Location name that may say, Office or Work, and its dialing properties have an area code of 732.
You also spend a lot of time in San Francisco, CA, on business and also have a vacation home in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.
With the new Phone book feature, you can create many separate Locations and also many separate Connections and will not have to worry about choosing the proper local POP every time your location changes, because you would have done that the first time you set this up.
Here is how to do it:
- Launch the AT&T Worldnet Phone book icon to bring up the Dial-Up Networking properties window, which will look similar to the following:
- Click the Modify button on the Location line and the Dialing Properties - When Dialing From/Local Settings Are screen will be shown:
Note: When you installed the Worldnet Windows CE software, it took the settings you had in your Location/Location Properties from your Primary PC. If you did not change the name, it may still be called New Location. With that in mind, we now want to create or modify Locations and Connections. To do this, click the New button. Doing this will open the Create New Location screen. Type in the name (anything you want to call it) of the location you will be calling from. We will call it San Fran. Click the OK option in the upper right corner or press the Enter key. Type in the local area code for your new location, which in this case would be 415 for San Francisco. Click the OK button in the upper right corner or press the Enter key.
Note: If you will be calling from a hotel or an office that requires special dialing patterns, you will want to click the Dialing Patterns... button to review what you may need to change to conform to your new location. Please see the information on the Dialing Patterns option.
- Click the Modify button on the Connection line from the Dial-Up Networking properties window and the Dialing Properties - Edit Connection/Change Number screen will be shown. It is here that we suggest you click the Modify button to Change entry name to reflect where you are calling from, possibly naming it, attwn svc @ sanfran.
Note: The Account number and Password should not be changed or erased. These two fields are required for dialing and connecting to AT&T Worldnet Service.
- Now, you need to click the Change Number button to change from a New Jersey PoP to a San Francisco, CA PoP.
From: Middletown, NJ...
To: San Francisco, CA...
- Click the OK button and a window will open and tell you that the number to be dialed has been changed. Click the OK button to continue. Now, you are set up to dial from a location in San Francisco...
- Now, when you get back to your New Jersey Office, all you will need to do is to click the downward pointing triangle next to Connection and change it to at&t worldnet svc. You also will need to click the downward pointing triangle next to Location and change it to work. Now the number to be dialed is a local New Jersey PoP and you are ready to access AT&T Worldnet Service once again.
Casual User
If you chose not to have separate Locations and Connections, you can change your dialing properties manually, when needed.
The above screen will be very similar to the one that the AT&T Worldnet Service Windows CE software setup for you after you installed it.
Now, lets say you are going to Pennsylvania for a weekend and you still want to check your e-mail. Well, you will need to click the Modify button on the Location line and the Dialing Properties - When dialing from screen will be shown.
You need to change the area code from 732 to 570. Click OK in the upper right corner or press the Enter key. Now, you want to click the Modify button on the Connection line and the Dialing Properties - Edit Connection/Change Number screen will be shown. From here you will want to click the Change Number button and change the State from New Jersey to Pennsylvania. Change the City from ALL to in this case, Scranton. Choose one of the numbers and click OK.
An information window will open and tell you that the number to be dialed has been changed. Click the OK button to continue. Now the number to be dialed in the Poconos is a local Pennsylvania PoP and you are ready to access AT&T Worldnet Service once again.
When you get back to New Jersey, you will need to reverse what you did. Changing your area code back to 732 and changing the State and City back to your local New Jersey POP.
The Casual User way is acceptable if you change locations infrequently, but if you travel often, it will be in your best interest to use the Power User way, which is to create new Locations and Connections for each of your destinations. This will get you on to the Internet quicker and with less aggravation.
Updating Your Access Numbers List
From time to time you should click the Update List button on the Choose Access Number screen. Doing so will bring up the following screen:
Clicking the OK button will dial up the AT&T Worldnet Server and download the latest list of access numbers. You will not loose your predefined settings.
Note: If your Primary Computer did not have the AT&T Worldnet Setup 5.0 or later installed at the time you installed the AT&T Worldnet Windows CE software on your Windows CE Device, then the Phone book installed will be old and we recommend you Update Access Numbers as soon as possible to get the most recent list.
If your Primary Computer did have the AT&T Worldnet Setup 5.0 or later installed at the time you installed the AT&T Worldnet Windows CE software on your Windows CE Device, then the Phone book installed will be a recent one and you will not need to Update Access Numbers at this time. It is a good idea however, to Update the Phone book every few weeks.
Dialing Patterns
- Before you dial a number, make sure that the location you are calling from does or does not require a 9 to be dialed before the number. If the location does require a 9 before the number, you will need to click the Modify button on the Location line from the Dial-Up Networking properties screen and the Dialing Properties - When Dialing From/Local Settings Are screen will be shown:
- Click the Dialing Patterns... button and a screen similar to the one below will be shown:
- If your present location requires a 9 before the number, then you will need to add a 9 before the G, 1FG and 011EFG. The end result will look like the screen below:
