Configuring your Windows CE Device
This document is intended to help users who are having difficulties connecting to and using AT&T Worldnet Service with Windows CE Devices. There are several steps involved, each of them explained below.
- Configuring your Windows CE Device to use AT&T Worldnet Service
- Configuring and launching the browser using AT&T Worldnet Service
- Using the e-mail client to access the user's AT&T Worldnet Service e-mail account
- Discussion on any known problems and solutions
To configure a Windows CE Device for AT&T Worldnet Service:
To configure your Windows CE Device to use AT&T Worldnet Service, the user needs to do two things. First, you need to Make a new Connection, and then you need to Configure the Dialing Properties, similar to Windows 95/98.
To help make your connection file, you will need a copy of your ACCOUNT.TXT file. If you registered previously, you should have either a printout of your account information from the Worldnet 1.22 Account Tool, a printout of your REG.INI, or used the Worldnet 2.02 Account Restore Tool to create and print out a WNETACCT.WNA file. The instructions below are written to use the ACCOUNT.TXT file, but it should be easy to find the corresponding fields in the other account file type formats.
Note: If you make a mistake while trying to create a connection, you may have to start all over again. For some fields, Windows CE does not allow the user to go back and edit.
To make a new connection:
- Open My Handheld PC, then launch the Program Files folder, and then choose Communications. You SHOULD now see several SHORTCUT icons: Inbox, Pocket IE, PC Link, Remote Networking, and Terminal, etc.
- Open Remote Networking, then choose Make New Connection. Note: The modem, as with any battery operated modem, draws power and drains the batteries, ensure that your AC adapter is connected.
- Type the name of connection. For example, at&t worldnet svc. Select the Radio Button Dial-Up Connection, and then click the Next button.
- From the drop down menu, select your modem.
- After selecting the modem, click the Configure button below it. Set the Modem speed (default is 19200, but it supports higher. I use 57600.) on Port Settings, then click the OK button. (DO NOT click the three Boxes, manual dial, term window before or after, DO NOT change Flow Control or other settings, leave Hardware Handshaking ON.)
- Navigate back to the Make a New Dial-Up Connection window, enter the AT&T Worldnet dial-in number in the upper right-hand corner. You could find your access number in the account.txt file. It's in the [Location] section, in the POP_NUMBER_0 field.
- Click the TCP/IP Settings option and remove the check mark from Server assigned name server addresses.
- Enter your Primary DNS and Secondary DNS numbers in space provided. DO NOT Enter WINS or IP address. Then click the OK button for the AT&T Worldnet Service. The Primary DNS is 204.127.129.4 and the Secondary DNS is 204.127.160.4. You will need to remove the check mark from the DNS settings box to enter numbers. Keep the 3 other boxes checked: Server-assigned IP address, Use software compression, and use IP header compression.
- Click the Finish button. It is probably best not to test until you have Dialing Properties properly setup
To configure the Dialing Properties:
- From the Start menu, select Settings, then launch the Communications icon.
- Click the Dialing tab to show the When dialing from field and the New button.
- Create a location. Enter the name you want, then click the OK option. The dialer will use this location to dial from. This may be important for area code header removal.
- Enter the Local Area Code (e.g. 602), and click the radio button Use: Touch-Tone Dialing. Don't EDIT dialing patterns. If you MUST dial 9 to get out of your office, or some other key numbers, then EDIT the dialing patterns as you wish, otherwise, leave them as they are. They should be set to G for local calls, 1FG for Long Distance, and 011,EFG for International calls. Add a 9, before each field to have the dialer dial a 9 to get an outside line.
- When done, click the OK button and exit the Communications Properties Control Panel window.
To configure the Microsoft Pocket IE browser:
- Launch the browser.
- From the View menu, select Options. Choose the Auto Dial tab and enter a check mark beside Use AutoDial.
- From Choose the Dial-Up Networking Connection used to Dial the Internet, select at&t worldnet svc or whatever named the connection in the above section Make a New Connection, step 3.
- It may be necessary to open a Web page in IE to have it load in the dialer. To do so, choose Open from the File menu.
- The Dial-Up Connection box will open and ask for your User Name and Password. You could get your network password from the ACCOUNT.TXT file. It's after the Login Name= field under the [Profile] section.
- Enter the Network Password from the ACCOUNT.TXT file. Place a check mark in the Save Password box. Do NOT enter a Domain name.
- You should see your AT&T Worldnet dial-in number in upper right hand corner, hook up the phone cable and dial by choosing the Connect button.
- If all goes well, you will hear the modem dialing. You are connected to the Internet. Congratulations!
To use the e-mail client to access an AT&T Worldnet Service e-mail account:
- launch the Inbox.
- Select Compose and Options, then the Services tab. Then click the Add button and select Internet Mail. Click the OK button, and enter a name, such as: Worldnet mail. Click the OK button.
- Under Connection:, select at&t worldnet svc or whatever you named your connection in the above section Make a New Connection, step 3.
- Under Mail Host (POP3 Host):, type postoffice.worldnet.att.net (for the INCOMING mail Server). Note: If you have a problem receiving e-mail, and all of your configuration information is correct, try using postoffice.att.net here instead. Some people have had success with this when all else failed.
- For the User ID, enter just your name for AT&T Worldnet Service, do NOT add @worldnet.att.net. (For example, joeuser only). Check your ACCOUNT.TXT file if you need to check your mail ID. It's in the [Profile] section, after the POP Name= field.
- For Password, on AT&T Worldnet Service, this is NOT the same as your ISP password, it is your E-MAIL password. This field is also in your ACCOUNT.TXT file in the [Profile] section, after the POP Password= field.
- For Host (SMTP Host) for sending messages if different from Mail host, use mailhost.worldnet.att.net.
- For Return address, use your full e-mail address (e-mail name and domain). joeuser@worldnet.att.net, for example.
- Click the Finished button.
- Test the system by sending and receiving some e-mail from your account.
Known problems and solutions:
This section discusses a few potential problems that users may encounter.
Wrong Network Username or Password
The most common problems I've seen, once configured, is the network password being erased or typed over. The dialer interface is very similar to the Windows95 Dial-Up Networking interface which allows the user to easily type over the network password. If this occurs the user will see the following error message while trying to connect:
Remote Networking - Disconnected, followed by:
Remote Networking - You have been disconnected from the remote computer you dialed. Retry the connection.
Updating Phonebook will produce an error under certain conditions
Issue:
The error, There is a problem updating access numbers. Please make sure poplist.txt file is not being used by other applications. may be shown if the user has the poplist.txt file open at the same time they are connecting to the AT&T Worldnet Server to Update their Access Numbers.
Workhouse:
Do not have the poplist.txt file open while Updating Access Numbers. If the file is open, close it and then try to Update Access Numbers again. If that does not work, reset your Win CE devise and try again after it starts up.
Incorrect Worldnet Mail Settings
It might be easy to configure the e-mail application wrong. The mail properties require the user to enter a mail host and a Host for sending messages if different from Mail Host. The confusing thing is that under mailhost, you should put postoffice.worldnet.att.net, not mailhost.worldnet.att.net, as many users may want to do. If this occurs, the user will see the following message while trying to connect to their service:
Inbox - Can't connect to service.: Could not connect to POP3 server. This could be the result of a misspelled server name, user name, or password, no network connection, or the server is not currently running. (Service error:16)
If this message is received, the user should check all his e-mail properties. The properties are accessed from the Inbox application by tapping the Service menu item, then select Properties. Make sure the settings are consistent to what was described in the previous sections.

If you have any other problems, review the settings. You might also check the following page for software updates:
