Before You Run Setup
Please perform the following steps after the download is complete (no download if you are installing from a CD-ROM), prior to installing AT&T Worldnet Service Setup for Windows CE.:
- Close all running Windows and/or MS-DOS applications on your primary computer.
- Close all running applications on your Windows CE Device.
- Close all active Dial-Up Networking or communications connections on your primary computer.
- Close all active Dial-Up Networking or communications connections on your Windows CE Device.
- Be sure AT&T Worldnet Service (preferably CSM 6.1 or later) has been installed and is working properly on your primary computer. If not, install it now and verify that it is working properly. After installation, be sure that it has connected successfully; after verifying this, make sure you have disconnected from AT&T Worldnet Service.
- Be sure that Microsoft ActiveSync is installed and working properly on your primary computer. If not, install it now and verify that it is working properly.
- Back up your Windows CE Device.
- Verify that your Windows CE Device is physically connected to the serial port used for communication between it and your primary computer.
- If you have a PCMCIA modem, make sure that it is recognized by your Windows CE Device. Some Windows CE Devices warn that the use of a PCMCIA modem may put too much of a strain on rechargeable batteries, and offer the option of switching it off, even though it may be physically inserted. In this case, be sure that your Windows CE Device's AC power adapter is plugged in and working.
Note: Because Setup attempts to automatically configure your Windows CE Device, there is a possibility that it will not prompt you if you don't verify that your modem is installed and working properly.
Setup Step-By-Step Procedure
- On your Windows 95, 98 Me, 2000 or NT 4 primary computer, use the Windows Explorer to locate the file wnetce3.exe. It will be in the directory you selected when you downloaded it. If you are installing from a CD-ROM, the file wnetce3.exe should be located in the tools directory. If you have trouble finding it, click the Start Button and select Find, then choose Files or Folders... to search for it on your hard drive.
- Double-click the wnetce3.exe icon to start the installation. Your primary computer will extract needed files from the distribution archive, set up the Install Shield wizard, and present you with a welcome screen.
- Click the Next button. Setup will advise you that files will be loaded onto your Windows CE Device.
- Click the Next button. Setup copies the wnCESetup.exe (for Win CE 2.11), wnCEPB.exe, account.txt and poplist.txt files from your PC to your Windows CE Device, and displays a Finish dialog, explaining that Setup should now be running on your Windows CE Device. You can also view the Release Notes at this time.
- Click the Finish button. and turn to your Windows CE Device. A dialog will be visible explaining that your desktop AT&T Worldnet Service settings will be replicated onto your Microsoft Windows CE device and that your Windows CE Device's Inbox will be configured, as will Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer (if installed). It also warns that any existing AT&T Worldnet Service configurations will be overwritten.
- You will be reminded to plug in the modem you will use for your AT&T Worldnet Service connection before proceeding. This applies to Windows CE Devices that have removable PCMCIA modems.
- Click the OK button. The program will configure the following:
- Dialing Properties
It will add a new location with the same name and settings as your primary computer's default location. This can be modified by choosing the Start button and selecting Settings from the Start Menu, then launching the Communications Properties icon and selecting the Dialing tab. Consult your Windows CE Device's manual for more information on how to modify or add locations. - Your Connection Profile
Your account profile within your Windows CE Device's Inbox (Pocket Outlook or another e-mail product):
Note: If you have a problem receiving e-mail, try using postoffice.att.net instead of postoffice.worldnet.att.net. Some people have had success with this when all else failed - Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer (if installed)
- Dialing Properties
- If more than one serial communications device is present on your Windows CE Device, Setup will then prompt you to select a modem. Select the modem you plan to use to connect your Windows CE Device to AT&T Worldnet Service.
- Note: Some Windows CE Devices present the serial connection to the primary computer as one of the choices, often identified as Hayes Compatible Modem on COM1:. If your modem isn't plugged in or recognized, this may be the only choice, in which case your Windows CE Device may automatically select the COM1 entry without prompting you.
- Once the proper modem is selected, Click the OK button.
- You can now access AT&T Worldnet Service using your Windows CE Device. You need to disconnect from your primary PC in order to use the modem.
After You Run Setup
The first time you try to connect to your AT&T Worldnet Service mail account using your Windows CE Device's Inbox, you may be prompted to enter your e-mail password. When you enter it, remember to check the Save Password check box if you wish to have your password stored on your Windows CE Device.
To free up additional space on your Windows CE Device, you may want to remove the transfer portion of AT&T Worldnet Setup for Windows CE. This can be done as follows:

Your account information can be found in a file on your primary computer, or on any computer on which you have installed AT&T Worldnet Service software and used it to register an account.
For AT&T Worldnet Setup software (versions 1.2, through 5.2.1) your account information can be found in the ACCOUNT.TXT file located in the WNBACKUP sub-directory of your Windows directory.
Other versions of AT&T Worldnet software (those that feature Account Setup for Netscape Navigator 1.22 through 2.02, or Microsoft Internet Setup Wizard) store your account information in a different file; consult the online documentation for those releases for more information.
Troubleshooting
When some users of AT&T Worldnet connect via their H/PC, P/PC (Handheld PC or Palm PC) or Pocket PC they get connected but then about 5 seconds later receive a Remote Networking alert that says: You have been disconnected from the remote computer you dialed. Retry the connection.
The following is a work around for the disconnect issue:
- From the Start menu, select Programs, then select Communication, then choose Remote Networking.
- Highlight the AT&T Worldnet Service connectoid and then select Properties from the File menu.
- Click Configure, and select Terminals, then check Use terminal window after dialing. Click the OK button, and then click OK in the upper-right corner. Hide the Remote Networking folder.
- Launch the Worldnet dialer from the Desktop.
- Click the Connect button. Once connected, the terminal screen will come up. Press the Enter key once (you should now see two lines stating Please Sign-on), and then click the OK button in the upper-right corner to close the terminal window. Click the Hide option. Now you can launch your browser or e-mail program and you should be able to stay connected.
Instead of the above work around (or in addition to), you can try the following:
- The Baud Rate should be set to the one just over the speed of your modem. If you have a 56 kbps or 33.6 kbps modem, you should set the speed to 57.6 kbps or 38.4 kbps respectively. These are located in the Dial-Up Connection: Configure area.
- Tweaking the Use IP Header Compression and Use Software Compression has been known to help. By default, both have check marks in them. Try removing the check marks. These are located in the TCP/IP Settings: General area.
- Some people have found that putting a check mark in the Use Server-assigned addresses works sometimes as well. These are located in the TCP/IP Settings: Name Servers area.
- If you can connect, but cannot get any Web pages, make sure the check mark for proxy settings is removed.
