Apple Remote Access and AT&T Worldnet Service
The following instructions will show you how to setup Apple Remote Access (ARA) for the Macintosh. They assume you already have a valid AT&T Worldnet Service account using another computer.
Note: You will need to find your AT&T Worldnet Service account information.
Requirements
- Hardware
- A Macintosh computer with a hard drive and 4 megabytes (MB) of memory (the Apple Remote Access software takes up approximately 9 megabytes of hard disk space).
- A modem with a data rate of at least 14400 bits per second (bps). A data rate of 28800 bps or faster is recommended by Apple.
- Software
- The Apple Remote Access 3.0 client software.
- System Software version 7.1 or later.
- Open Transport 1.3 or later (included with Mac OS 8.0 and later). Note: If you don't have Open Transport 1.3 already installed, you can download it from http://www.apple.com.

Part Two
- Open the Remote Access control panel.

- If you want ARA to remember your password, enter your AT&T Worldnet Service password into the Password field and click the Save Password check box. (Your AT&T Worldnet Service password is a random arrangement of 15 or 16 characters, not your e-mail password. If you don't know your password or AT&T Worldnet Service username, call the AT&T Worldnet Service support line.)
- Enter your local AT&T Worldnet Service POP phone number into the Number field, including the area code if different than the area code you are calling from.
- Click the Options button. The Options dialog is displayed.
- Select the Protocol tab at the top of the dialog box.
- Set the Use Protocol field to PPP.
- Check the boxes to allow error correction and compression in modem and to use TCP header compression.
- Click the OK button. The Options dialog will close.
- Select Save from the File menu to save your changes.
Part Three
- Open the Modem control panel.
- Select the appropriate modem script for your modem from the Modem drop-down list.
- Close the Modem control panel.
- Make sure your modem is turned on and that the phone line is properly connected to the modem.
- Make sure you have configured Open Transport for an ARA connection as above.
Part Four
- Open the Remote Access control panel.
- Click the Connect button. A status window will be displayed. After you connect to AT&T Worldnet Service, the Cancel button in the Remote Access Status window will change from Connect to Disconnect and a counter showing your time connected will start running. You can now start up Netscape, Internet Explorer, and your other Internet applications such as e-mail, FTP, Usenet newsreaders, etc.
- When you want to end your AT&T Worldnet Service session, click the Disconnect button in the Remote Access control panel.
