WinVN 16 and AT&T Worldnet Service

This page contains instructions on configuring the 16 bit version of WinVn for use with AT&T Worldnet Service.

To install WinVN 16:

  1. Create a WinVN directory under your AT&T Worldnet Directory and unzip the archive into that directory.
  2. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP: If CTL3DV2.DLL doesn't exist on your system, or if it is newer than the one in your Windows System directory, Move - DO NOT COPY! - CTL3DV2.DLL into your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
There must be one and only one instance of this file on your disk!
  3. Make sure WINSOCK.DLL is in your path before starting Windows (ie C:\windows or C:\worldnet depending on were it is located.
  4. Very Important: WinVN's GWINSOCK.DLL interfaces fine with Windows 3.1, Netscape Dialer and WINSOCK.DLL, so there is no need to modify the WINVN.INI However, if you have problems connecting to the news host follow the instructions in the readme file, or contact the creators.
Explanation: GWINSOCK.DLL is not a replacement for the WINSOCK.DLL provided by Windows so don't edit WinVN.INI and replace the GenSockDLL= line in the INI file with a WINSOCK.DLL, The GenSockDLL=GWINSOCK.DLL entry is the interface library that WinVN uses to call your WINSOCK.DLL. Do not delete this file...
Note: You might get better performance over a modem connection with GENASYNC.DLL rather than GWINSOCK.DLL. I have not tested this so I do not know if it works.. If someone does and it works better please let me know..

To configure WinVN 16:

  1. Launch WinVN. The Communications Options window will appear.
  2. Now enter the news and mail server info, and your time zone

    • Mail (SMTP) Server: mailhost.worldnet.att.net
    • Time Zone: Select your time zone

    communications options window
  3. Click the OK button.
  4. WinVN will now bring up your Personal Information window. Input your information, if your e-mail address and reply to address are the same you can skip the reply-to, WinVN will give you a dialog box saying they are the same if you put the same info in both boxes.
    • Full Name: I think you know this one...
    • E-Mail Address: userid@worldnet.att.net
    personal information window
  5. Click the Ok button when done.
  6. WinVN will now create two files. WinVN.ini and your newsrc files, and you will receive prompts such as this:
    prompt window
Just press the Open button and WinVN will prompt:
    create window
Just click the Yes button to create the file.
  7. Now follow the same process for the newsrc file.
  8. You are set to go to the next step which will get you the newsgroups.

Connect

  1. Well if everything went right you should see this:
    request list
  2. By clicking the Yes button, WinVN should launch the AT&T Worldnet dialer and you should see the dialers connect box
  3. Go ahead and connect, once connected you will start to see newsgroups being collected, if WinVN gives an error at this point:
    • The program does not know where winsock.dll is, and you must add C:\worldnetor C:\windowsto your path statement in your autoexec.bat
    • Possibly the news server is down (highly unlikely, but it can happen)
  4. This part will download all the newsgroups that are available, this will take awhile so be patient

Once the newsgroups are finished you can select which groups you want to subscribe to and your on your way.

Note: Don't forget to Add the WinVN Icon to your AT&T Worldnet Service Folder!!
