Microsoft Internet News and AT&T Worldnet Service
These instructions are designed to set up Microsoft's Internet News (version 1.0, build 1162) for use with the AT&T Worldnet Service. All screenshots are taken from that version.
Note: You will need to find your AT&T Worldnet Service account information.
To configure Microsoft Internet News for news:
- To begin, either double-click the Internet News icon on your desktop or go to Start menu and select Programs and then Internet News.
- From the News menu, choose Options.
This is my configuration. You may want some things different, but I certainly suggest this setup.
As a courtesy to other newsgroup users, leave the News sending format set to Plain Text. If you are unsure of what something does, click the question mark in the upper right hand corner, then click the item that you have a question about. This will work throughout these setup instructions.
- Click the Read tab at the top of the window.
Again, this screen is user-specific. You can decide on these items yourself. If you have a question about an option, use the question mark box and click the item. By the way, worldnet.announce is a great place to start your news reading. Any important announcements about service status can be found there.
- Now comes the important step. Click the Server tab. Make sure that the server name for netnews.worldnet.att.net is exactly as below. If it does not exist, click the Add tab. The dialog box will look exactly like the dialog box in the next step, so jump ahead.
If the netnews.worldnet.att.net server is already in your list, select it, then click the Properties button.
- In the News Server Properties window, be sure that the News Server name is netnews.worldnet.att.net, then move on to the next step. Do not fill in any other information, as you do not have to log on to the server.
- Click the Connection tab. Select the button for I use a modem to access my newsgroups, and select the Dial-Up Networking connection for AT&T Worldnet Service. If you do not have Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking configured for the AT&T Worldnet Service, please see our page of Dialer information.
- Click the Advanced tab. Make sure that it looks just like the screen below, then click the OK button.
- The Fonts, Spelling, Signature, and Advanced tabs are all based on individual preference. (If you do not have a Microsoft program that includes a spell-checker installed, you will not see the Spelling tab.) To complete the required setup of Internet News for AT&T Worldnet Service, click the OK button to save your settings.
That's it!! You're now set to use Microsoft Internet News with AT&T Worldnet Service!
