Download Gravity - For High-speed Connections & Other ISPs

This document contains information on configuring the Microplanet Gravity newsreader to access the AT&T Worldnet news server through another ISP. If you are looking for instructions for access through an AT&T Worldnet connection, go here. For support or download please visit Tom's Gravity Pages.

Accessing the AT&T Worldnet servers from another ISP requires SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) security. Since Gravity doesn't have native support for the needed SSL, you will need to use a free helper program called Stunnel. These instructions will detail how to get it and use it to access the AT&T Worldnet news servers. When Stunnel is installed, continue with the instructions below. Since we haven't been able to find a way to make Gravity e-mail work with AT&T Worldnet e-mail servers from another ISP, we recommend that you use the outgoing e-mail server for the ISP that you're using.

Note: You will need to find your AT&T Worldnet Service account information.

To Configure Gravity for For High-speed Connections & Other ISPs:

  1. After downloading Gravity, install it and run the program. The opening screen will appear. Click OK to continue or register if you've paid the registration fee for it.
    gravity splash
  2. The next screen will ask for specific pieces of information for server setup. Input the information as shown below and click OK.
    • News server nickname: inetnews.worldnet.att.net
    • News server address: 127.0.0.1 or localhost
    • Mail server (SMTP): Your ISP's outgoing e-mail server
    • Full Name: Your Name
    • Organization: You may leave this blank
    • e-mail address: emailid@worldnet.att.net
    • Reply address for posts: emailid@worldnet.att.net
    • Log on using:
      • Name: your e-mail ID (the part to the left of the @) sign
      • Password: Your e-mail password
Note: For most people, using 127.0.0.1 as the news server address will work. However, in some cases using localhost is the only way to get it to work. Use whichever works for you. If neither of these work for you, try using your computer name. The location of this depends on your operating system, but is usually found somewhere in the Network information accessible through the Control Panel.
    setup tab
  3. Run the Stunnel application to establish a secure connection. You must keep Stunnel running whenever you use Gravity to access the AT&T Worldnet newsgroups from another ISP.
  4. Then, click the Newsgroup tab in the toolbar and select Re-read all groups. Gravity will download the newsgroups available on the server. Note: If you have an authentication problem and you know that your e-mail ID and password are correct, try using your full e-mail address (emailid@worldnet.att.net) in the User Name field.
    reload
  5. After the groups have finished downloading, the Subscribe to Newsgroup window will pop-up. Choose which groups you want to subscribe to by double clicking on them. To find all the AT&T Worldnet newsgroups, type worldnet in the search box.
    subscribe
  6. The groups will be listed at the top of the window. To download the headers, double click the group.
    news list
  7. After receiving the headers, you can read through the posts and follow-up.
