Saving Time by Reading News Offline
You can save a great deal of your online time usage if you read and reply to your newsgroups offline. We've provided instructions on how to do this for some newsreaders, and hope to add to the list in the near future.
IE3 Internet News
There are instructions for Internet News at:
Microsoft
IE4 Outlook Express
While connected, open Outlook Express, and do the following for each newsgroup that you wish to view offline:
- Highlight the newsgroup.
- Right-click and choose Properties.
- Click the Download tab.
- Select the When downloading... option.
- Select what you wish to retrieve.
(the instructions below assume that you downloaded both headers and bodies)
Now, you are set for viewing the newsgroups offline.
When you want to view the newsgroups:
- Establish your Internet connection.
- From the Tools menu, choose Download All. Everything should begin downloading.
- When done, disconnect the dialer but leave Outlook open.
- From the File menu, choose Work Offline.
- Read and reply as desired. Your replies will be placed into the Outbox until you choose to send them.
- When done; from the File menu, choose Work Offline to remove the checkmark.
- When you want to send the replies; from the Tools menu, choose Send. If you have your account options set to use a modem, it should dial in and send your replies. Remember to disconnect when you are done.
Note: You can put Download All as a button on your toolbar or use Ctrl+Shift+M to download everything you selected. To place it on your toolbar, highlight the news server and right-click the toolbar. Choose Buttons and add Download All. Now when you want to download, just click the button.
Netscape 4 Collabra
If you want to use Netscape 4 to retrieve all of the message headers and bodies for offline viewing, open Collabra, and do the following:
- From the File menu, choose Go Offline. A dialog box will open.
- Select the Download Discussion Groups option.
- Click the Select Items for Download button.
- Select the newsgroups that you wish to download and click the OK button.
- Click the Go Offline button, and wait for the newsgroups to download.
- When the download has finished, disconnect the dialer. Netscape will not do that for you.
You can now read the messages and reply to the newsgroups offline. When you reply, use the Send Later option.
When you are ready to go back online:
- Establish your Internet connection.
- From the File menu, choose Go Online.
- If you have messages to send; from the File menu, choose Send Unsent Messages.
- Be sure to disconnect the dialer when you are finished.
Note: To save even more time, you might want to just flag messages that you want to read. You will find detailed instructions on how to do this in the Netscape help file.
Agent and Free Agent
The help files provided with these programs are outstanding, and you can even read them offline, and save even more time! Just go to Help, and search for offline and you will learn all you need to know!
Gravity
While connected to the Internet, open Gravity, and do the following for each newsgroup that you wish to view offline:
- Highlight the name of the group.
- Right-click and select Properties.
- Select the Retrieve and store article bodies option.
- Click the OK button.
When you are ready to read the newsgroups:
- Establish your Internet connection.
- Click the Retrieve All headers (All Groups) button on the toolbar.
- After it has finished downloading, click the Connect/Disconnect button on the toolbar to sever the connection to the news server.
- Disconnect the dialer.
- Now, you can read and reply to the articles offline. The next time you start up your dialer, open Gravity and connect to the news server, any posts that you have composed will be sent to the newsgroups.
Note: These instructions are for downloading all headers and bodies in the subscribed newsgroups. You can save even more time if you download headers only, and select the articles that you want to download. For instructions on how to do this, click on Help, and search for off-line.
