Outlook Express 4 Setup

This document explains how to configure Microsoft Outlook Express 4 for use with AT&T Worldnet Service. If you already have an AT&T Worldnet Service Account configured, and just want to check the settings, get the WURD on Outlook Express 4 Account Options. The instructions on this page will show you how to use the Account Wizard to set up a new account using Outlook Express 4. You can either read through the entire setup or skip to the section that you need.

Note: You will need to find your AT&T Worldnet Service account information.

Overview

Outlook Express is both a e-mail program and a news reader all in one. It allows you to setup multiple mail and news accounts. For example you could have it check your e-mail from AT&T Worldnet Service as well as from other e-mail providers or multiple AT&T Worldnet Service accounts. You also can specify multiple news servers. These instructions are for configuring Outlook Express for use with AT&T Worldnet Service e-mail and news, however, you can easily modify these instructions for other accounts by replacing the necessary server information that you can obtain from your service provider.

  4. The Outlook Express Internet Connection Wizard will appear. Fill in the information that each screen asks. Below are screen shots of the steps:
    1. Fill in your name. This is the name that will appear in the From: line of your e-mail. You can use your real name or if you prefer an alias, you can place that in this space.

    3. Enter the appropriate server information. The servers for AT&T Worldnet Service are:
      • POP3: postoffice.worldnet.att.net

  6. Give it a name that you would like displayed for this account. This is the name that will appear when you're looking at a listing of the accounts you have setup for Outlook Express.

  7. Choose your connection type. This choice is personal and to help you choose what will work best for your needs, here are small descriptions of each:
    • Connect using my phone line: choose this option to have Outlook Express automatically dial your provider when you click on the Send & Receive button.
    • Connect using my local area network (LAN): choose this if your computer is connected directly to the Internet via a local area network. Note: This option is not relevant for AT&T Worldnet Service. You must be dialed into an AT&T Worldnet Service POP to be able to retrieve mail from the service.
    • I will establish my Internet connection manually: choose this option if you would like to manually connect to AT&T Worldnet Service instead of having it automatically dialed for you.

  8. Click Finish and you're done. To check your mail, click the Send & Receive button on the toolbar. If you have authentication problems, try entering your e-mail ID in lowercase.

When you are sending e-mail from an account other than the default e-mail account, go to File, select Send Using, and choose the account you want to use.
