Download Lotus Notes 4.6 and AT&T Worldnet Service

Starting with version 4.6, Lotus Notes supports POP3 and SMTP. Now that Notes supports these protocols, you can use Notes with AT&T Worldnet Service to create and retrieve Internet mail.

In addition to this document, the Lotus Notes help includes step-by-step instructions on how to setup Notes for Internet mail. Search the Notes help for POP3 and several documents will be found that give great details.

Note: You will need to find your AT&T Worldnet Service account information.


To create an Internet Mail Database:

  1. Launch the Notes workspace.
  2. From the File menu, select Database, and choose New... The following window will open:
    new database
  3. Enter a name for your Internet mail database (for example Internet Mail).
  4. In the template list select the Notes 4.6 Mail template.
  5. Click the OK button.

To create an Internet Mail Location Document:

  1. Launch your Personal Address Book.
  2. From the View menu, select Advanced, and choose Locations.
  3. From the Create menu, choose Location.
  4. Set the Location Type to Dialup Modem:
    location type
  5. Name the location (for example, POP3)
    location name
  6. Set the Ports to TCPIP:
    ports
  7. Set the Mail System to Internet, the Mail File Location to Local, and the Mail File to the name of the database you created in Step 1:

  8. In the Internet Mail section set the following:
    • Send outgoing mail: directly to Internet
    • Internet mail address: <your e-mail ID>@att.net
    • Outgoing (SMTP) internet mail server: mailhost.att.net
    • Incoming internet mail server: postoffice.att.net
    • Internet username: <your e-mail ID>
    • Internet password: click the button and enter your e-mail password
    • Leave mail on server: Setting this to yes will leave you e-mail on the e-mail server. Setting it to no Notes will delete the messages from the e-mail server once they are downloaded to your computer.
    • Use SSL: leave as No
    • Port: leave as 110

To retrieve your e-mail:

  1. Connect to AT&T Worldnet Service.
  2. Be sure you're using the location document for when you're connected to your Internet mail system.
  3. Click the mail icon in the status bar.

  4. Click Receive Mail on the menu that appears.
    Note: If you want to send and receive mail at the same time, click Send and Receive Mail.
  5. To view new mail, open the mail database you created on your computer.

To send e-mail:

When you create e-mail messages, the messages are immediately sent if you are connected to AT&T Worldnet Service and have selected the location you created for AT&T Worldnet e-mail.

You can compose messages while not connected to AT&T Worldnet Service. These messages will be held by Notes until you select Send and Receive Mail as described above.
