Filtering Junk E-Mail with Netscape 4
The message rules in Netscape Messenger are highly configurable, and can be easily used to filter your junk e-mail, aka spam. You can filter it into a folder so you can make sure that you didn't catch anything accidentally, or actually delete it so it never even reaches your inbox. Check out all of the options, and see what works best for you. The instructions below will show you how to filter e-mail that isn't addressed to you into a folder. You can check it at your convenience, rather than have it mixed in with your other e-mail.
To filter junk mail:
- Add a folder to your Inbox by selecting New Folder from the File menu.
- Type a name for the folder, and select where you want to put the folder. We chose Spam for the folder name, and placed the folder under the Inbox.
- From the Edit menu, select Message Filters if you're using Netscape 4.5. If you're using Netscape 4.0, select Mail Filters.
- After the Message Filters window opens, click the New button.
- Enter information into the Filter Rules window as shown below:
- Click the OK button, and you'll see the Message Filters window below.
- After you're satisfied that the information in that window is correct, click the OK button. From now on, all e-mail that doesn't have your e-mail address in the To or CC fields will be sent to the Spam folder.
If you use the filter shown above, it will catch some e-mail from mailing lists, etc. We recommend that you periodically check the e-mail in this folder. You could then add filters for all e-mail that you want to see by clicking on the More button. We've shown a screen shot of a sample below:
