Download Microsoft Internet Mail and AT&T Worldnet Service

These instructions are designed to set up Microsoft's Internet Mail (version 1.0, build 1162) for use with the AT&T Worldnet Service. All screenshots are taken from that version. If you haven't run Microsoft Internet Mail yet, a wizard will run asking for the configuration information. Use those instructions instead of these if that is the case.

Note: You will need to find your AT&T Worldnet Service account information.

To configure Microsoft Internet Mail:

  1. To begin, either double-click the Internet Mail icon on your desktop or go to Start, select Programs, and then choose Internet Mail.
  2. From the Mail menu, choose Options.
    send tab
This is my configuration. You may want some things different, but I certainly suggest this setup. If you are unsure of what something does, click the question mark in the upper right hand corner, then click the item that you have a question about. This will work throughout these setup instructions.
  3. Click the Read tab at the top of the window. This screen will appear.
    read tab
Again, this screen is user-specific. You can decide on these items yourself. If you have a question about an option, use the question mark box and click the item.
  4. Now comes the important step. Click the Server tab. Make sure that the two server names are exactly as below.
    • Outgoing Mail (SMTP): mailhost.worldnet.att.net
    • Incoming Mail (POP3): postoffice.worldnet.att.net
On the rest of the tab, fill in the correct information. Your Account Name is the part of your e-mail address before @worldnet.att.net. Your password is your e-mail password assigned at registration.
    server tab
  5. When you are sure that everything on the Server tab is correct, click the Advanced Settings button at the bottom of the dialog box. Another window will pop up. Make sure that it looks something like the one below. You should place your correct e-mail address in the Reply To: field. You may also want to configure other options on this page if you have any special needs.
    advanced settings
  6. The Fonts, Spelling, and Signature tabs are all based on individual preference. (If you do not have a Microsoft program that includes a spell-checker installed, you will not see the Spelling tab.) To complete the required setup of Internet Mail for AT&T Worldnet Service, click the Connection tab. Set the button to I use a modem to access my e-mail and choose the correct Dial-Up Networking connection to use. You will need to have Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking configured for the AT&T Worldnet Service
    connection.

That's it!! You're now set to use Microsoft Internet Mail with AT&T Worldnet Service! If you have authentication problems, try entering your e-mail ID in lowercase.
