One of the most powerful aspects of the Internet is the ability to interact with people around the world via your PC. The basic ways to do this are through E-mail, newsgroups, mailing lists or discussion groups,chat groups, or by publishing the information you want to communicate. This chapter will provide a brief introduction to mailing lists. Be sure to also read the introduction to netiquette, the informal set of rules for "polite" behavior on the Internet.

Mailing lists,also known as discussion groups, are collections of the e-mail addresses of people who are interested in a particular topic. When you send E-mail to a mailing list, all of the people who are on the list receive the message. You subscribe and unsubscribe to mailing lists by sending an e-mail message to a specified place.

There are mailing lists on almost any subject imaginable. Some Web sites have their own mailing lists or you can get lists of the available lists. Here are a few:
