Download Visual IRC and AT&T Worldnet Service

Visual IRC '97 is freeware. However if you like it, you ought to make a donation to the guy who wrote it (Adrian Cable, a.k.a. MeGALiTH), so he can continue to develop VIRC. The program is provided as a *.zip (archive) file. You will need a program such as WinZip to extract the individual program files from the archive. After they have been extracted, you can begin configuring Visual IRC for chat on AT&T Worldnet Service.

To configure Visual IRC:

  1. After extracting the individual files from the archive, start the program. VIRC will first display a splash screen, then load its extensive list of servers. After that, you will see the following window:
    Start Screen
  2. Click on File and select Client Setup... You will see the following window:
    Settings Screen
  3. Fill in the information in the window shown above as follows:
    • In the Nickname field, type the name or handle by which you want to be visible as. Do not include spaces in the Nickname.
    • In the Backup nick field, type an alternate nickname to use should your first choice not be available.
    • In the Email field, type your e-mail id, i.e.username@worldnet.att.net.
    • In the Real name/URL field, type a name, first and last, or the URL of your personal Web page. That being said, we recommend that you not use your real name and e-mail address. Just remember, that using an alias will not make you anonymous. Your computer can still be traced.
    • In the server field, select any server.
The rest of the fields can be left as is. That's it! Click the OK button, and you will be back at the window shown in Step 1.
  4. Click the Start! button, and your screen will now look like this. Click the Connect button to connect to the IRC server.
    Connect Screen
  5. After you have connected to the IRC server, you should see the following screen:
    Connected Screen
  6. Click the Maximize button above the cursor in the preceding illustration, then click the Channel Box button (yellow icon with # sign). You will then see the next window:
    Channel Box
If this box is blank, click in the Channel window type in the name of a channel, preceded by a # sign. Some friendly Undernet channels are #newbie, #newbies, #attworldnet and #wnm. Here, I have typed in #attworldnet. Click the Add button and the channel will be added to the main window.
Note: #attworldnet isn't a registered channel, and might not be occupied when you get there.
  7. To join a channel, click on its name in the Favorites window, and then click the Join button. Close the Channel window by clicking on the X in the upper-right corner. The main window will now look as below, with the list of current occupants of the channel in the box on the right, and conversations on the left. @W is an Undernet bot that takes care of the channel. On other channels, you might see @X or @Y instead. Any nick that is preceded by an @ sign is a channel operator. To chat, type in what you want to say in the box at the bottom and hit enter.
    Chat Screen
  8. When you are done chatting, just click the Leave button:
    Leave Screen
  9. Then, click the Disconnect button and close the VIRC window:
    Disconnect Screen
