Download mIRC and AT&T Worldnet Service

To configure mIRC:

  1. After starting the installation program, you will see the following window. Choose the folder that you want it installed into, and click the Install button.
    mIRC Installation
  2. After the program is installed, click the icon to run it. You will see the following window. This is the person who wrote the program. Click the little x in the upper right corner to close this window. You can get to this window again by going to Help and selecting About.
    About mIRC
  3. Go to the File Menu and select Options. Select Connect, and fill in the information as follows:
    • Select a server from the drop down list.
    • In the Real Name field, type a name, first and last.
    • In the e-mail field, type your e-mail id, ie. username@worldnet.att.net .
    • In the Nickname field, type the name or handle by which you want to be visible as. Do not include spaces in the Nickname.
    • In the Alternate field, type an alternate nickname to use should your first choice not be available.
That being said, we recommend that you not use your real name and e-mail address. Just remember, that using an alias will not make you anonymous. Your computer can still be traced.

  4. Click on Options. I recommend the following settings, but they are really personal preference items.

  5. Click on Local Info. Leave this alone, it should look like this:

  6. Click on Identd. and put your username in the User ID field. Make sure the other info is as shown in the boxes below.

  7. Click on OK, and you will be presented with the following window. Type #attworldnet in the top box as shown.
Note: #attworldnet isn't a registered channel, and might not be occupied when you get there...
    mIRC Channels Folder
  8. Click the Add button, and you will see the box below. Click the join button to join the channel.
    mIRC Channels Folder
  9. After you enter the channel, you will see the window below. All of the people on the channel will be seen in the box on the right. @W is an undernet bot that takes care of the channel. On other channels, you might see @X or @X instead, if the channel is registered. Not every channel is registered. Any nick that is preceded by the @ sign, is a channel operator.
    mIRC Chat Channel
  10. If you want to chat in the channel, type in the bottom box as is shown below.
    mIRC Chat Channel
  11. After you finish typing, hit enter. Your typed message is then moved to the upper box, and can be seen by everyone else in the channel. The nick of the person who typed the message is in front of all messages.
