Chat Clients and AT&T Worldnet Service
Chatting is a favorite pastime of many AT&T Worldnet Service members. All you have to do, is download one of the chat clients below, install and configure it, and you're off and chatting! <g>
There are two common types of chatting:
- Instant Messaging (IM)
IM is favoured for person-to-person chat, as well as small group chat, and some larger chat forums. These programs generally allow you to maintain lists of friends, block unwanted people, and even transfer files. Fast computers and high-speed connects allow for voice and video chat. - Internet Relay Chat (IRC)
IRC is the granddad of chat and is supported by a strong and vibrant community and is generally for open party-line type of chats.
AT&T Worldnet also has support available via chat that is called HELPchat! which is Java-based chat.

Instant Messaging (IM) Clients
We have some of the basics to setup some of the more popular IM clients. These programs are all rich in features (chat groups, blocking, file transfers, etc...), so it is worth going through the help files that come with each!
Adium
- Platform: Mac
- Type: Multi-Service
- Adium allows you to use multiple existing chat service accounts in one convenient place. You must have already created your accounts with the services you wish to use before using Adium. Adium will not create these accounts for you. Adium supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, Trepia, and Napster.

- Type: Stand Alone Proprietary
- Allows you to chat with people on the AIM network.

iChat
- Platform: Mac
- Type: Stand Alone Proprietary
- Apple's great chat program allows you to chat with people on the Mac.com and AIM networks. It is automatically installed with OS X.

ICQ
- Platform: Mac, Windows
- Type: Stand Alone Proprietary
- Allows you to chat with people on the ICQ network.

- Allows you to chat with people on the MSN network.

Trillian
- Platform: Windows
- Type: Multi-Service
- Trillian allows you to use multiple existing chat service accounts in one convenient place. You must have already created your accounts with the services you wish to use before using Trillian. Trillian will not create these accounts for you. Trillian supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, and IRC.

ChatNet
- Platform: Mac
- Type: Stand Alone IRC
- ChatNet provides a simple Macintosh interface to chat and send files on the Internet or a Local Area Network. ChatNet offers two modes for chat. The AppleTalk Mode allows multiple Macintosh computers running ChatNet to chat or send files on a Local Area Network, with or without a Server. The IRC Mode allows chat and file transfer through an Internet Relay Chat Server. ChatNet acts as a client program providing a button oriented graphical interface for all IRC functions.
Ircle
- Platform: Mac
- Type: Stand Alone IRC
- Ircle is a small but full featured IRC client which makes use of the typical Macintosh user interface. We found a link to a Quick Start Up Guide to help you get up and running.
MacIRC
- Platform: Mac
- Type: Stand Alone IRC
- MacIRC is a shareware IRC client for the Macintosh. It has many features, including supporting Multiple channel windows, and Multi-server connections.
mIRC
- Platform: Windows
- Type: Stand Alone IRC
- mIRC is the shareware IRC chat program made for Windows by Khaled Mardam-Bey. It offers a fast and clean interface to IRC. It automates all IRC transfers and connections. Includes colored text, DCC, XDCC, file servers, and much more.

Pirch
- Platform: Windows
- Type: Stand Alone IRC
- Pirch is a Windows-based IRC application that has an easy to use interface, and supports nearly all IRC2 commands. It is rich in features and is a very popular IRC application.

Visual IRC '97
- Platform: Windows
- Type: Stand Alone IRC
- Visual IRC is a freeware IRC chat program for Windows. Powerful and feature-filled, it also sports an attractive interface. Extensive voice, video and object scripting capabilities are provided.
