Netscape 7.0x Mail & News and AT&T DSL Service

Note: To send e-mail you will also need to use Stunnel.


To add an e-mail account:

  1. Select Mail & Newsgroups from the Netscape Window menu.

  2. The Account Wizard will appear. Since you're going to add an AT&T Worldnet account, select Email account and click on the Next button.

  3. Enter the following information and then click on the Next button.
    • Your Name: The name you would like to appear in the From field of your outgoing messages
    • Email Address: Your e-mail address

  4. Enter the following information and then click on the Next button.
    • Incoming Server Type: POP
    • Incoming Server Name: ipostoffice.worldnet.att.net
    • Outgoing (SMTP) Server Name: You can use an application called Stunnel to provide the needed SSL support. You'll find configuration information on our Stunnel page.

  5. Enter your e-mail ID (the part of your e-mail address to the left of the @ sign) in the User Name field and click on the Next button.

  6. Enter a name for your account in the Account Name field and click on Next.

  7. Congratulations! You've created your account. Click Finish to save the settings and exit the Account Wizard.

  8. Select Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings from the Edit menu.

  9. Click on Server Settings for your e-mail account, and select Use secure connection (SSL) under Server Settings. The port should change to 995 as shown below. Click on the OK button to save your settings.

  10. At this point, check your e-mail to make sure that your settings are correct. The first time you try to access the mail server, you will be asked for your e-mail password.

To add a news account:

  1. From the Mail File menu, select New and then Account.

  2. Select Newsgroup account and click on the Next button.

  3. Enter the following information and then click on the Next button.
    • Your Name:
      The name you would like to appear in the From field of your outgoing messages
    • Email Address: Your e-mail address

  4. Enter the following information and click on the Next button.
    Newsgroup Server: inetnews.worldnet.att.net

  5. Enter a name for your account in the Account Name field and click on Next.

  6. Congratulations! You've created your account. Click Finish to save the settings and exit the Account Wizard.

  7. Next, we have to tell Netscape to use SSL to access the news server. From the Edit menu, select Mail & News Account Settings.

  8. Select the news server as shown in the graphic below and select Use secure connection (SSL) under Server Settings. The Port should be changed to 563. Click OK to save the settings.

  9. The first time you try to access the news server, you will be asked for your username and password. Complete them as shown below.
    • Username: Your e-mail ID (the part to the left of the @ sign)
    • Password: Your e-mail password
