Netscape 4.7x and AT&T Worldnet Service

To configure Advanced preferences:

  1. Click on Advanced. Here you may specify your preferences on whether or not to enable Java and to accept cookies. Both of these items allow Netscape Communicator to interpret Web pages and make your viewing more pleasurable. However, these features do take time to load. The following should help you make your choices:
    • Automatically Load Images: images will load automatically; the alternative is to view text only with icons in the position of the images. If you wish to view the images, you can do so by clicking on the Images button on the toolbar.
    • Enable Java: allows small programs called Java applets to open automatically and add functionality to Web pages.
    • Enable JavaScript: allows JavaScript commands to open automatically and add functionality to Web pages.
    • Enable style sheets: allows Web pages formatted with style sheets to load as intended by the author.
    • Send email address as anonymous FTP password: sends your e-mail address automatically when you log onto an FTP site.

  2. Click on Cache. Here you may set options for memory and disk caches (such as size and location), or to empty both caches immediately. You can also specify how often Navigator checks the network for document revisions. Consider the following as you make your choices.
    • Memory Cache: Enter a number to specify the size (2400k to 2000k is suggested). Click the Clear Memory Cache button to clear the cache immediately.
    • Disk Cache: Enter a number to specify the size (7680k is suggested). Click the Clear Disk Cache button to clear the cache immediately.
    • Disk Cache Folder: If you wish to change the default disk cache location, click the Choose Folder button, locate the folder you want, and double-click it to select it.
    • Document in cache compared to document on the network - The choices are obvious. Consider Every Time results in slower performance while Never sometimes displays stale pages. Regardless of what is specified, you can always obtain document revisions by holding down the Shift key and pressing the Reload button.

Tip: Netscape performs cache maintenance when you exit the application. If you find that exiting takes longer than you want, you may be able to remedy the problem by reducing the size of the disk cache.

  3. Click on Proxies. This is only used when you have to go through a proxied host. It lets you specify the proxy servers and port numbers for FTP (File Transfer Protocol), Gopher, HTTP(HyperText Transfer Protocol), Security (Secure Sockets Layer),WAIS (Wide Area Information System), and SOCKS (firewall bypass software) protocols.
If you are running Navigator on an internal network from behind a firewall, you will need to ascertain from your system administrator the names and associated port numbers for the server running proxy software for each network service.
AT&T Worldnet users generally do not need to worry about this tab.
