Netscape 4.7 and AT&T Worldnet Service
To configure Mail & Newsgroups preferences:
- From the Edit menu, and choose Preferences.
- Click on Mail & Newsgroups. Within this section, you can modify how the Netscape mail and news windows look. The default settings shown below will work best.
- Click on Identity. This defines who you are and where your signature file is located. Complete the fields shown below, replacing username with your name and emailid with your E-mail ID. If you wish to add a signature to your messages, you will need to make a separate text file with your signature using NotePad or any text editor. Save it. Click the Choose button and browse to where you saved it.
- Click on Mail Servers. In this window you can specify to Netscape which servers to use and your user ID. Click the Add button.
- The Mail Server Properties window will appear. Enter the information as shown below on the General tab. You may also want to set the Check for mail option to suit your personal preferences. Click OK.
- The Mail Servers window will reappear. Now, enter the following in the Outgoing Mail Server field as shown below:
- Outgoing mail server: mailhost.worldnet.att.net
- Outgoing mail server user name: your e-mail ID
- Click on Newsgroup Servers. Here you can specify your servers name and the location of your newsgroup directory. Click the Add button.
- The Newsgroup Server Properties window will appear. Complete the information as shown below. Click OK.
- Click on Addressing. In the dialog box, the default settings shown below for location of addresses, multiple addresses, and display of names will be your best bet.
- Click on Messages. This section defines how mail and news are transmitted. Make your choices for the options listed below.
- Message Forwarding: Choose the message to be inline, quoted, or as an attachment.
- Replying to a Message: Choose whether or not to include the original message and where you want it placed.
- Spell Checker: Choose whether or not to use the spell checker on your messages before sending them.

The default settings shown below are best since not all of your recipients will be able to read messages in HTML format. You always have the option of overriding these selections through the Options Panel of the Composition Window.
- Click on Return Receipts. In this section you can set preferences for return receipts. Messenger supports two types of receipts: delivery receipts and read receipts. Delivery receipts notify you that your message has arrived in the recipient's inbox on the mail server. (The server must support the Delivery Service Notification - DSN) Read receipts notify you that the recipient has opened the message. (The recipient must have a mail program that supports Message Disposition Notification - MDN.) At the time that you write your message, you must specify if you want a return receipt.
- Choose the type(s) of receipt that you wish to send to others.
- Choose the location for received receipts.
- Choose whether or not you wish to acknowledge receipts that you receive. If you choose to return receipts, you may customize this option further by clicking on the Customize button.
- Click on Disk Space. Here you may limit the amount of disk space taken by messages.
- If you wish to avoid downloading very large messages, choose the first option under All Messages and type the maximum size.
- To keep message folders compact, choose the second option under All Messages and specify the amount of disk space.
- Choose how you wish to clean up newsgroup messages under the section entitled Newsgroup Messages Only.
