Configuring Netscape 4.5

This document provides a step by step procedure for configuring Netscape Communicator 4.5 for a Macintosh computer. Even though these instructions apply to the Macintosh, the same information should apply to other platforms. It assumes that no other previous Netscape products have been used on this computer.

Note: You will need to find your AT&T Worldnet Service account information.

To configure Netscape 4.5:

  1. Navigate to the folder where you installed Netscape Communicator.
    Netscape Communicator Folder
  2. Double-click the Netscape Communicator Icon. This will bring up the Creating a New Profile window. Click the Next button.
    New Profile Setup
  3. Enter the information as shown below and then click the Next button.
    • Your Name:The name that you would like to show on all messages sent by you. It can be changed later at any time.
    • Email Address: your e-mail address
(either emailid@worldnet.att.net or emailid@att.net is acceptable)
    Information About You
  4. Select a name for the profile you are creating. This name is only available on your computer and is simply the name of the profile so you can remember it. The default is the same as the name you entered in the Information about You window. You can leave it as such or rename it to anything you desire. Once you have entered a name for the profile, click the Next button.
    Your Profile Name
  5. This gives you the choice of where to store your profiles. The default is in the System Folder/Preferences/Netscape Users. It is suggested that you leave it in this location. Click the Next button.

  9. These settings allow you to choose if you want a shortcut icon to appear on the desktop (you can move it later to wherever you wish) after creation of the profile. The shortcut icons allow you to launch directly to Navigator (browser), Messenger Inbox (email & newsgroups), or your Address Book. You can dispose of these shortcuts if you find you don't use them by trashing them, so it is suggested you check all three to start with and find which is more useful to you. Make your selections and then click the Next button.

  10. If you had other e-mail programs in use before, you many wish to leave the box checked to try and import them into Netscape. Not all programs will be available. If you have not used other programs before or you do not wish to import data, then uncheck the selection and click the Next button.
    Netscape Import
  11. You will now see the Setup Completed window.
  12. This is the final step and the last one in which you can go back to change any of the previous entries. If you are satisfied with what you have entered then you can click the DONE button and Communicator will launch. If you have previously set up your dialer, then it will automatically connect you. Other profiles can be created, following the exact same steps, by launching the User Profile Manager (within the Communicator folder) at any time.
