Netscape 4.0x and AT&T Worldnet Service
A visual guide to configuring Netscape 4.0x
This document contains instructions necessary to configure Netscape 4.0xto work with AT&T Worldnet Service. Neither AT&T Worldnet Service nor Netscape have sanctioned this document and neither are responsible for its contents. These instructions assume you have Netscape 4.0x installed on your computer.
Before Installing
You must make sure you are going to install the proper version of Netscape. If you are going to continue to use the AT&T Worldnet Service dialer (16bit) to access AT&T Worldnet Service, then you must use the 16bit version of Netscape. If you intend to use Win95 Dial-up Networking (32bit) to access AT&T Worldnet Service, then you can use the 32bit version of Netscape.
We strongly suggest that you install Netscape 4.0x into a completely new directory. If you have not installed Netscape 4.0x, download and install it now.
Important Note: If you are upgrading from a 16bit version of the AT&T Worldnet Service (Netscape 1.12, Netscape 2.01E, Netscape 2.02E or Netscape 3.0) software to the 32bit version of Netscape 4.0x, then you must configure your Windows 95 Dial-up Networking. Instructions on how to do this can be found in the Dialers section of WURD. After you do this, do not use the old AT&T Worldnet Service icon to log on or you will be using the 16bitversion. Once you are comfortable that everything is working properly, rename your old Worldnet directory to something like Worldold. After a week or so, if you do not encounter any problems, then you can probably safely delete the Worldold directory. However, keep a copy somewhere of all your Id and password information incase you need it again in the future.
After Installing
There are two areas that you will need to configure in Netscape in order to use it with AT&T Worldnet Service effectively. They are:
- Creating a Profile
One of the best new features of Netscape 4.0x is the ability to have multiple user profiles. This means you can share Netscape with other members of your family who have their own user ids, or even access multiple ISPs with it. - Preferences
Preferences for each profile can be set by going from Edit menu, choosing Preferences. You will see settings for each of the following:
