Download Netscape 3.0x and AT&T Worldnet Service

This document contains instructions necessary to configure Netscape 3.0 to work with the AT&T Worldnet Service. Neither AT&T nor Netscape have sanctioned this document and neither are responsible for its contents. These instructions assume you have Netscape 3.0 installed on your computer.

Before Installing

You must make sure you are going to install the proper version of Netscape. If you are going to continue to use the AT&T dialer (16bit) to access AT&T Worldnet Service, then you must use the 16bit version of Netscape. If you intend to use Win95 Dial-up Networking (32bit) to access AT&T Worldnet Service, then you can use the 32bit version of Netscape.

If you are going to install the 16bit version then you can just install it directly into the current AT&T Worldnet Service directory. But first, backup your AT&T Worldnet Service directory (in case of problems). After you install the 16bit version, your old Netscape (version 1.12, 2.01E or 2.02E) will no longer exist.

If you are going to install the 32bit version, then install it into a completely new directory. After the install, your old Netscape will still exist.

IMPORTANT NOTE - If you are upgrading from a 16bit version of the AT&T Worldnet Service (Netscape 1.12 or Netscape 2.01E) software to the 32bit version of Netscape 3.0, then you must configure your Windows 95 Dial-up Networking. Instructions on how to do this can be found in the Operating Systems and Dialers section of WURD. After you do this, do not use the old AT&T Worldnet Service icon to log on or you will be using the 16bit version. Once you are comfortable that everything is working properly, rename your old Worldnet directory to something like Worldold. After a week or so, if you do not encounter any problems, then you can probably safely delete the Worldold directory. However, keep a copy somewhere of all your Id and password information in case you need it again in the future.

After Installing

There are four sections that you will need to configure in Netscape in order to use it with AT&T Worldnet Service effectively. They are:

Additional Installation Tips

Loads of information can be found at the Netscape Unofficial FAQ.

The following tips are from Chuck Simmons < chrlsim@garlic.com > who posted them in the Netscape navigator news group...

A few tips for installing the new Netscape Navigator 3.0

The regulars do different things and seem to have only occasional problems but here are some ideas. Backup your news and mail directories, your bookmark.htm, address.htm, cookies.txt and netscape.ini (win 3.1 and Gold). You should not need the backups but you will feel better.

A very important step in installing any software is reading the readme file that may be provided. If you are using Windows 3.1, you may go ahead and download the software to an empty directory you create ahead of time. Type the file name and return in a DOS window or double click the file in File manager. You will now be able to read the readme file in the directory you put the file into. For Windows 95/NT as well as for a first time UNIX install, go to the FTP site, ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/navigator, and read the readme before downloading. I don't know Mac so I can only recommend going to the FTP site and reading the readme file.

Be sure to get the version you really want or need. For Windows users, if you are running 16 bit now, download 16 bit even if you are running Windows 95 unless you are using Microsoft Dial-Up Networking or other 32 bit winsock/dialer software. Get minimum if you do not want or need plug-ins. Get standard if you want Live3D and so on. If you want the home page editing feature, you must get Gold. Note that the version with plug-ins has a p in the file name.

When downloading large files, some users may have trouble because of automatic mail checking hanging. You may wish to turn off this feature for the download. Other users may have inactivity timeout problems. For the latter case, set mail checking to every 5 or 10 minutes.

Most of the regulars do not use the download links. You may use the FTP feature in Netscape directly by connecting to:

ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/navigator/

For Windows anyway, download to an empty directory you create for the purpose or move the downloaded file to a new and empty directory. For UNIX this does not matter but I untar in a new directory and use a symlink for the executable. This lets me keep old versions separate.

Windows users should stop all programs running in the background. Be sure you don't have Microsoft Office running or any virus scanners. These can be restarted after the installation is complete. In addition some virus checkers set certain files read only. This can cause an installation failure. Check the NUFAQ: http://www.ufaq.org/ for details.

If you install in a new directory, remember that the old version directories are used by the new version. Any desired changes to this must be made in preferences and the registry (or netscape.ini). Frank Tabor suggests if installing to a new directory, to copy the mail and news directories, bookmark file, address file, and cookie.txt to the new directory before installing. Again, check all preferences after installation to be sure the new directories will be used. The directories you usually need to verify or change are mostly set up in the various tabs of the Options menu. Become familiar with the choices and setups in these tabs.

I think it is best not to uninstall the old and I usually install over the old version in Windows. Do, however, look at the CoolTalk information at the end of this file.

Although there may no longer be a problem, you may delete the entire cache directory and netscape.hst before installation. In some cases, doing this will give more stable operation.

For installation or operational difficulties, use Help | Handbook, http://help.netscape.com and http://www.ufaq.org/ for further helpful information. If you have questions after looking at these and reading any information relating to your problem, then check snews://secnews.netscape.com/netscape.navigator for questions on the same or similar problem. If there are none, post your question and if the answer is known, someone will help you.

UNIX install should be as before. However, the new java_30 file may be different and I suggest putting it in the customary directory for your system. Users need not delete cache or any other files and should find the upgrade smooth. Admins should consider informing users of any X resources they may find helpful. Info in Netscape.ad.

Special Update for CoolTalk

If you had previously installed the CoolTalk Watchdog, you need to uninstall it by un-installing Netscape Navigator, and then reboot your machine before installing the latest version of the Navigator. In WindowsNT and Windows3.x, you can also do that by removing the CoolTalk Watchdog Icon from the Startup Program Group, and then restart Windows before installing Netscape Navigator 3.0
